Introduction

You are an alien explorer from another planet sent to earth to examine the human race. Your alien species has contracted a fatal virus and you learned that humans have been successful in producing vaccinations that stop the spread and prevent this virus from forming. The only way to help your species is by conducting an intensive study of the human body with a full comprehension of the networking of the human body systems. Fortunately, you are not alone in this effort. Therefore, you are to return to your planet with a full report of at least one body system within 4 days. Your prodigy is counting on you. "NaNew NaNew".

Essential Question: What are the organs that make up one of the human body systems and how does it function?

The Task

Use Encarta, the Internet, and other reference resources to obtain information about your body system.

Organize your information into a published report using Power Point.

The Process

  1. First you'll be assigned to a team of three students.
  2. You may choose one of the following systems to research:

(Check out these links)

On-Line Biology Book: The Nervous System

On-Line Biology Book: The Circulatory System

On-Line Biology Book: The Respiratory System

On-Line Biology Book: The Endocrine System

Human Anatomy Online: Skeletal System

On-Line Biology Book: The Digestive System

  1. Obtain enough information to adequately report about your system to your species. (Remember- It’s all foreign to them) Your Power Point Presentation should be at least 5 slides. You can answer the following questions using the KWHL Chart
  2.

    Evaluation

    Score

    Collaboration

    Logical and Supportive Conclusion

    X 2

    Presentation

    Utilization of Technology

    4

Consistently demonstrates ability to work collaboratively.

Conclusions are logical and well supported

Engaging, accurate presentation of information that clearly identifies the traits their country.

    Appropriate technical resources are utilized.

    3

Often demonstrates ability to work collaboratively.

Conclusions are somewhat logical and demonstrate some reasonable support.

Accurate presentation of information that clearly identifies traits of their country.

Some appropriate technical resources are utilized.

    2

Infrequently demonstrates ability to work collaboratively.

    Conclusions are not supported well.

Generally accurate presentation of information that identifies traits of their country.

    Limited use of technical resources.

    1

Never demonstrates ability to work collaboratively.

    Conclusions are not supported.

Presentation of information is incomplete and/or inaccurate.

    No evidence of technical resources.

    Conclusion

You should have researched and documented your human body system. You should have organized your information into a Power Point presentation.

Do you think that you have enough information to adequately explain to your alien species exactly how the human body system that you and your team selected functions?

Will your alien scientists be able to genetically engineer an altered breed of species from the information that you have given them?
