Preparation

Online teaching requires a high degree of organization and ongoing follow-up. Some pointers are given here.

Your online class format must be clearly established so all students know exactly what is expected of them. A pattern of online group behavior and expectations needs to be established. This format may be decided upon unilaterally or collaboratively. Decisions on format should include, at minimum, the following:

  1. How much flexibility is possible and desirable?
Must all lessons be covered, or can students pick and choose?
If all lessons must be covered, must they be done in the same sequence and at the same pace?
  2. Are the lesson and course activities and assignments optional or required?
Are there choices of assignments and can students propose their own?
  3. Are discussions and group activities important to the course?
If so, is it necessary to have everyone on the same page at the same time?
  4. How often are students expected to be online? Is this a requirement?
  5. How will students be assessed for a grade in the course?
(See Lesson Three for Online Assessment ideas.)
  6. Is there a closing date for the course?
