NIH image is specialized image analysis software which is goodfor it's uses, but for general imagery work Graphic Converter 2.2is recommended. Graphic Converter also automatically generatesthumbnails. NIH for Macs is downloadable http://rsb.info.nih.gov/nih-image/download.html.

NIH Image can only view files, and supports TIFF, PICT, PICS,and MacPaint formats, but does not support GIF or JPG images which are prevalent types on the Internet. Graphic Converter 2.2can view, and convert to and from, all of the formats listedabove and more than a dozen others.
