Context of This Report:
This report was created
as an initial summary overview of elearning tools and
methods upon which to base future innovations training seniors. This report is
presented in the context of extensive past and ongoing discussions on related
topics as referenced in this report.
Summary Narrative:
Advice: Don’t assume we all have awareness of the same Elearning tools and innovations. Our perceptions are
tainted by what we are already familiar with, and the newer resources tend to
be easier, more powerful, more mobile, and more integrated with other tools. Strongly
recommended is all team members view the following six short videos as a short awareness raising tutorial to provide a common foundation
for discussion defining what we all are thinking regarding “best practices.”
(1 ½ hours of insights)
“We’re all
ignorant, only on different topics” Will Rodgers
A Top Ten for CyberSeniors:
What is Broadband and What's in it for me?
10. Fingertip access to the world's knowledge base for
self-directed education and entertainment. Find the best info. on your greatest interests, and discover new interests.
9. Eventually everyone and everything will be interconnected, and
many essential services may only be available online. You need to see what's
available to you now, health info, government services, and much more.
8. A community's GPA (Good People Acting) is the number of locals
helping others match specific needs with available resources as a mutual
support social network. If we all share what we know, we'll all have access to
all our knowledge. You need to see how you can help others, and how others can
help you.
7. Independent living can be dramatically extended via 2 way video
Telecare and other services, and the potential exists
for flextime telecare employment from the social
safety of your residence; Elders helping Elders. Homebound elders can tap a button and
be face-to-face with anyone, anywhere, anytime, at no cost. Try
it, you'll like it!
6. Everyone can be both learner and teacher using easy to learn
web-based tools which allow anyone the opportunity to both learn and teach;
anything, anywhere, anyone, anytime. Enjoy the satisfaction of sharing “the
love of learning” by sharing what you know, and/or can learn along with others.
5. Whatever you put online can be an enduring contribution to the
welfare of others; leave your legacy via digital storytelling, collected useful
content, sharing your wisdom of years, and modeling how to encourage the
self-directed learning of others. Calling all Citizen Professors!
3. One third of seniors live alone. Seniors dating websites
are very popular. With a $20 webcam you can enjoy meeting new people via 2 way
video using www.skype.com (and enjoy face time with friends, family and
grandchildren, for free.)
2. Seniors are the fastest growing group on the web, particularly
with social media, where you can join communities of interest, find both old
friends and make new ones. The new
web-based tools are easier to learn and more powerful than ever!
1. We all need
encouragement and broadband gives us the opportunity to help others maintain a
positive attitude toward life; sharing good humor, and life-affirming beauty in
photos, videos, stories and evolving new media.
MUST-SEE TED VIDEOS: For Inspiration;
1.
Computer generated visualizations can make complex ideas and
relationships instantly understandable. A great example is the following 4 minute video.
Hans Roling 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes
http://www.gapminder.org/videos/200-years-that-changed-the-world-bbc/
2. That the most scalable educational solution
is distance learning…. is dramatically made clear in this 15 minute TED
Talk: Think “lifelong learning for seniors” as a major trend.
Daphne Koller: What we’re learning from higher education http://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_koller_what_we_re_learning_from_online_education.html
3. 6 Billion have mobile
phones, many capable of viewing online videos…
How Web Video Powers Global
Innovation
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/chris_anderson_how_web_video_powers_global_innovation.html Crowd
accelerated innovation and how video is returning us to being an oral global
culture. We’re transitioning from a written culture to a video culture.
4. Bill Gates touts the Khan Academy as the future of education.
The Kahn Academy uses “show me how”
videos while tracking every step of the learning process, and records peer
mentoring in a model that should be considered for ongoing digital literacy
skills delivery.
http://www.ted.com/talks/salman_khan_let_s_use_video_to_reinvent_education.html
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/dan_pink_on_motivation.html
6. A Must SEE Video:
Social Media Revolution 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGzAHbBmcnk This fast-moving video may be more
suited to younger viewers, but presents facts on Social Media in a very
gripping fashion.
Top Level Issues for
Discussion
Consider whether we need to address the following
potentially dangerous assumptions. It is advised we use multimedia presentations
and onsite group discussion, to reach consensus on comparisons regarding how
we’re defining best practices in detail.
1.
Assumption:
PC and Tablet skills are nearly identical; browsing, searching, email, MS
Office? We’ll cover both, and will use the new Kindle Fire tablets?
2.
Assumption:
The 150+ page webwise manual and hours of basic
training is required as compared to multiple easy quick hands-on experiences
that create motivation prior to hours of basic training. Perhaps one precedes
the other?
3.
Assumption:
That a suitable Aha video doesn’t already exist, and that investing $18k is
required. Ephipio’s Justin stated we need to be clear
on what 2-3 main points such a video will communicate regarding “Why people
should care about getting online.”
We should storyboard our answer to this key question, and thoroughly
review the relevance resources already online, before making a decision on Ephipio. Viewing a couple dozen of their videos is strongly
recommended to better understand their techniques, and to see what we do and
don’t like as related to our crisp message delivery, both in content and media
styles.
4.
Personal interviews will not
scale, and many models of “interest inventory” tools already exist. Sites like http://gcflearnfree.com/everydaylife make it easy to self select
online resources and training based on interests without needed an interviewer.
Most adults echo Winston Churchill’s quote “We’re
always ready to learn, never to be taught.” Constructivist learners (adults) prefer to build their own knowledge which is more than viable with interest-driven
exploratory sites for beginners like “everydaylife”
and most certainly via basic searching skills where one can find resources on
their key interests on their own at any time. We can offer linear skills training for those who prefer
them, as well as independent “mini-lessons” for those more oriented to
self-directed learning and driving
their own explorative learning experiences.
5.
Static beginner lessons
serve a need, but dynamic feeds such as newsletters, blogs, social media (facebook and twitter) can offer something new to explore
every day for those who are not intrinsically driven but who prefer to be led.
Web sites that don’t change
quickly become boring as has been proven by those who quickly tire of “Walled
Garden” environments for beginners.
6.
Most commercial seniors
training sites hide their training from the public. It is likely that extensive
free online training resources that are as good, and/or are often superior, can
be quickly identified as the solution to “bringing online training to scale.”
7.
Adults need to be introduced
to online learning with a first short successful experience. Typically, once a
first successful experience has been achieved, adults strongly prefer the
independence and flexibility of online learning compared to classroom
instruction. Diverse formats for free quality online instruction on a great
many topics are proliferating.
8.
Extensive adult literacy
resources already exist designed for low income, ethnic, and low literacy populations,
which I believe will prove to be appropriate for the majority of seniors.
9.
Even short term casual
searching will reveal extensive resources specifically for seniors already
categorized and listed in long directories by topic;
Ex. Search “humor for
seniors” “apps for seniors” “Computer and internet basics for seniors” Recommendation:
Creating an online clearinghouse with a few dozen of the best of these
directories would not require huge budget investments and would create rich
exploratory sites for seniors, quickly.
10. Value-added
topical original mini-lessons, including links to existing free online courses
from beginner through advanced, could begin with introductions to 1. Mobile
health; www.mhimss.org , 2. Entrepreneurship and
workforce options for seniors, 3. Meaningful volunteerism, citizen philanthropy,
civic engagement, political engagement, and special group projects of all kinds
will need examples so everyone realizes the unlimited opportunities for
imagination and innovation.
Ex. From Urban TechFair site; http://urbantechfair.digistarsolutions.com/
“While social Networking is about user generated
content….the Urban Tech Fair is about User Generated
Activity!” –Jim Neusom, Executive Producer, Urban
Tech Fair
We need to
recognize that what makes social media and mobile devices so popular is the
ease of content creation and sharing, and the growing number of innovative
devices, tools, and sites that support this dynamic. In question is what does
our project advocate regarding hyperlocal and
political activism, civic engagement, volunteerism, and more? We lack a
compelling mission as “our story” that compels others to want to join us.
Noting
Connected Living didn’t assess who had what level of mental or physical
disabilities were in evidence prior to training, or initially realize 24% of
residents were already online, we may need to initially assess where each
senior fits within the following three tiers of ability, interest, and needs.
Three
Fundamental Tiers of Seniors Requiring Different Strategies:
Tier
One: Minimal functionality, the greatest need may be
receipt of services, social contact and encouragement. Someone to assist them
meeting essential needs is required and to determine whether and how “getting
online” is relevant to their overall situations. Even beginning computer skills
training might not be appropriate for sustained meaningful activity to justify
broadband adoption. Consider Skype as perhaps the first and only skill some
residents might have the ability to use. Passive video monitoring would still
justify broadband adoption at the most basic needs level, allowing seniors to
remain in their homes.
Tier
Two: Average abilities to learn, able to follow up on
personal interests, beginner to intermediate levels presumed appropriate. In
question is what applications might prove most meaningful and motivating for
diverse individuals, first on the fun social learning entertainment side, and
then on the financial, workforce, health and mentoring others side. That 24% of CL housing clients were already online with broadband
and PCs raises the questions;
1. Are some residents immediately ready and willing to receive training
to become peer mentors for others? 2. Are they a ready audience for advanced
applications?
And of relevance is the Global Aging report as
related to the emerging monoculture related to everyone realizing we’re now
global citizens.
Conclusion:
Setting the right context is of primary
important “Why should I care?”
A short 30 second
video for each topic of potential relevance answering the “what and why” per
topic/tool/application to seniors is recommended;
Example: http://30secondmba.com
To be followed by a “learn more” link to better understand what more is
involved regarding the “what” with just enough on the “how” to understand the
level of complexity so as to make a decision on “learn more?” – or not. The
Commoncraft.com and other explanation videos can work well here, noting they do
not cover the “how-to.”
The “how-to” piece would be video screen
captures as used by webwiseseniors, which is very
much a mainstream tool. One can search youtube using
the name of any “app” to find a “how-to” video showing exactly how to use it,
click by click.
Ex. Search youtube
for ‘explaineverything
app’ and/or
‘quickoffice app’
Secure safe sites for
families, group and community learning, and global causes.
Tyze.com (see the short
video tour) is a safe site model for adult caregivers of aging parents to share
day-to-day tasks, and related information. Many similar family oriented sites
exist from everything from baby showers to wedding planning and more.
Edmodo.com (see the short
video tour) looks similar to Facebook but can be used
to teach online classes, organize group learning and activities and more.
Ning.com offers a $3/month
social network with additional features at nominal cost.
http://classroom20.ning.com is an example of
an elaborate global implementation integrating Ning
with other social media tools.
