First National Study of People with Disabilities
Who are Self-Employed
These are just a few of the findings from a study conduced by the
National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research's
Research & Training Center on Rural Rehabilitation Services, connected
with the Montana University-affiliated Rural Institute on
Disabilities.
"Research has shown that there are nearly as many people with disabilities who own their own business as who work for Federal, state, and local governments combined," says Rural Institute director Tom Seekins. "When you consider the extraordinary difficulty that people with disabilities have had finding employment, starting one's own business makes good sense."
The study's major findings are online at http://ruralinstitute.umt.edu/rtcrural/SelEm/SelEmRePrgRpt.htm .
Figures from the 1990 Census show that self-employment is more prevalent in rural than in urban areas (in 1990, 10.2% of the rural population was self-employed versus 6.0% of the urban population) and that people defined by the Census Bureau as having a "work disability" are self-employed at a higher rate (12.2%) than people without disabilities (7.8%).

One-Stop toolkit serving people with disabilities
http://www.onestoptoolkit.org Welcome to the One-Stop toolkit serving people with disabilities website, a technical assistance product developed by DTI Associates, Inc. on behalf of Work Incentive and Disability Program Navigator Grantees. This website provides accessible and comprehensive tools and information to grantees who provide services that help individuals with disabilities find and keep good jobs. The resources on this website will help grantees widen the array of services available to individuals with disabilities at One-Stop Centers, and integrate those services seamlessly into One-Stop operations. This website is targeted toward state and local One-Stop service providers, but it contains resources that will be useful to a broader audience as well. Individuals with disabilities, advocates, parents, counselors and other professionals should find a rich source of information here. funded by Office of Disability Employment Policy, US Department of LaborVirginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in partnership with the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston, has been awarded a cooperative agreement from The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). This cooperative agreement will provide funds for the implementation of a national technical assistance and training effort designed to increase the capacity of Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRPs) and other community-based service providers that currently operate programs that result in segregated work outcomes and non-work options for people with disabilities in the "Special Minimum Wage" program established under section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 29 U.S.C. 214(c). The desired outcome of this training and technical assistance (T-TAP) effort is to work with providers using section 14(c) certificates to:
(1) evolve their programs to provide integrated employment outcomes (i.e., non section 14(c) employment) in non-stereotypical jobs based on customized employment strategies and individual choice; and
(2) to increase wages of people with disabilities who are currently working at less than minimum wage through the use of customized employment strategies and individual choice. The Institute for Community Inclusion

Self-Employment Success Story
Lissie's Luv Yums (Gourmet Dog Treats)
She started a dog walking service and was doing pretty well, walking three dogs, but she knew she could do better. She wanted to give her charges treats, a good tasting dog biscuit that she made herself. She talked to her mother and a friend about it, and together they began to develop a recipe, testing it on a friend's dog. The biscuits were to be made from only the very best ingredients (flour and wheat berries from Wheat, Montana exclusively), and were to be decorated with beet juice hearts. They began manufacturing them in their kitchen using the family's mixing bowls, cookie sheets, and oven. Lissie was already thinking bigger. She was going to expand her business into "Lissie's Luv Yums", and promote awareness through presentations to groups who wanted to know about her business and her disability. In order to expand the business, she needed funding for packaging materials, promotional materials, equipment, and a video public service announcement that would act as an advertisement for the products and to advocate for women to abstain from drinking when pregnant. She found the money through a Jobs Training Partnership Project and The University of Montana Rural Institute which granted money to people with disabilities who wanted to start their own businesses. Lissie, her mom, and their friend started "Lissie's Luv Yums"! In the following three years, what had been a product which was sold only in Great Falls, Montana through the local flea market and friends, has expanded to a company which has customers in many locations in Montana and 15 other states, has a public service announcement (PSA) which is aired on the local Montana TV stations, and has a variety of products, including buttons exhorting "I Luv Lissies Luv Yums". Lissie and her mom make presentations to national conferences that highlight self-employment for people with disabilities in Montana, Nevada, and North Dakota. They also participate in fund raising events for Native Americans. They contract with employees to help them manufacture the products, have a mix so you can make your own biscuits, and have began to contemplate other products related to people's beloved pets. Self-Employment Success Story
Jerry: Self-employed in the Photography industry
Jerry is a Montana native that has lived his entire life in what he considers heaven. As with most boys growing up in Montana, he took to the outdoor life hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and generally exploring the great state of Montana. At the tender age of eight he started packing a brownie camera that his grandmother had given him. Ever since then he had a camera with him no matter where he went. Ultimately in his late twenties he decided to give up big game hunting and devote all of his spare time to serious wildlife and nature photography.
Jerry kept his work to himself, family and friends until one day he quit his job to take a shot at being a professional photographer. He has had gallery showings in his hometown of Missoula, a Mecca of sorts for many diversified talented artists.
Statement From Jerry
There is a notion that outdoor and nature photographers are considered artists, this may be true up to a point. I consider nature or our creator as the all time greatest, and the photographer as the means to capturing this wondrous artistry of our natural world.
It's my hope that works of nature and wildlife photographers will be not only appreciated for their beautiful portraying of nature's gifts, but also a wake up call to the accelerated extinction of these irreplaceable miracles.
