Four Lone Eagle Consulting Presentations Spring 2017
Celebrating the beginning of my 20th
year as Lone Eagle Consulting, are
the following four presentations; March
20-May 9th, 2017;
Local, Regional, National, and International
LOCAL: University of Montana Western, Dillon, Montana
I presented on my most excellent
learning adventure which began when I left the University of Montana Western in
1997, to deliver the first Internet workshops for remote Alaska Native villages
on the Yukon. The presentation took place across the hall from my old office
where I spent 11 years.
Online Innovations for
the Rural and Native American Pioneering Tradition of Creative Adaptation
The next
Environmental Science Department colloquium will occur on Monday, March 20 at
3:45 in Block Hall 311. This presentation by UM-Western alumnus, Frank Odasz, will
focus on digital challenges and opportunities, related to our rural and Native
American traditional cultures and quality of life; essentially
focusing on how we might balance digital opportunities and technological
disruptions. UM-Western’s digital/computer technology history and future
opportunities will be shared. All members of the campus and Dillon community
are invited to attend this presentation.
In 1985, Odasz
was hired as UM-Western’s first Microcomputer Applications instructor, and he
created and operated the Big Sky Telegraph (1987-1997), an online communication
system which predated the Internet, and connected rural teachers at over 100
one-room schools in Montana. In 1997, Odasz created Lone Eagle
Consulting in Dillon, continually aiming to promote innovation in the methods
of teaching teachers and citizens online for universities in Idaho, Washington
State, and predominantly Alaska for the last 20 years.

Idaho’s
Rural and Urban Quality of Life; Our pioneering tradition of creative
adaptation.
Maintaining healthy families, and communities, in
our world of accelerating change increasingly requires careful attention to
balancing both the digital opportunities, and ongoing awareness of the growing
risks of technological disruptions. Maintaining awareness of our growing number
of choices for sustainability, based on family values, to preserve our
cherished rural lifestyle, will be addressed.
Given
affordable broadband access and appropriate devices, bridging the digital
divide depends on what first you learn is possible, and then, choose to do with
broadband. Without attention to growing a rural, and/or urban, culture of
creativity, the digital divide will persist, even with broadband. This
presentation will address actionable strategies for scalable training,
motivation, and ongoing support for grassroots champions and social
entrepreneurship in rural, tribal, and urban communities.

Frank
Odasz is secretary the Rural Telecommunications Congress, and is president of
Lone Eagle Consulting, which has specialized in rural, remote and indigenous
Internet learning since 1997. Frank has conducted hands-on workshops on rural
ecommerce and telework strategies funded by USDA, USDOL, Alaska Department of
Labor, NTIA/SBI and Connect Alaska. Lone Eagle’s grassroots adventures range
from presentations on digital trends across Idaho, from 2000-2008, with
emphasis on a five year partnership with ISU’s College of Technology Workforce
Training office, creating unique online courses for rural adults, and
web-raising workshop events with a mobile laptop lab, funded by USDA. As a lifestyle entrepreneur and online
educator, Frank enjoys many new freedoms made possible by leveraging the
opportunities of being “online” and is on a mission to ‘lend his wings to
others.’
Lone
Eagle’s grassroots adventures range from delivering the first Internet
workshops to 11 Alaska Native villages in 1998 to presenting rural and
indigenous broadband training best practices for the 21 economies of Asia-Pacific
Economic Cooperation (APEC International Conferences) in Toyko, the governments
of Australia and Jamaica, and for the International Telecommunications Union’s
first Indigenous ICT’s Commission of the Americas in Mexico City. Recent online
courses include teaching entry-level digital entrepreneurship as 21st-century
workforce readiness. Email: frank@lone-eagles.com

What matters most, is sustaining
Indigenous Cultures, Values, and Quality of Life…which depend heavily on
leading with the best cultural digital opportunities, while creating awareness
on how to avoid the growing risk of abuses, from both beyond the villages, as
well as within; such as social media cyberbullying. Given affordable broadband
access, and appropriate devices, bridging the digital divide depends on what
first you learn is possible, and then, *choose to do with broadband. Lessons
learned from 20 years of onsite, and online, indigenous broadband training best
practices, amid persistent challenges, informs what’s now becoming possible. As
president of Lone Eagle Consulting, Frank Odasz has presented
internationally on indigenous broadband training best practices and will share
his recent NTIA Alaska Native broadband pilot projects; What matters most
for many may be…. Making the choice to speak with a global voice as stewards of
the Earth and of our one human family. Learn more; http://lone-eagles.com/NTIA-big-sky.html
